Before you clean air purifier filters, identify which layer you are handling. A removable mesh screen or fabric sleeve may be washable, while the pleated filter behind it may need replacement instead. Treating both the same way can damage a filter that was never designed to get wet.

Identify the pre-filter and main filter
Check your purifier’s model number and maintenance guide before opening it. Look for separate instructions for the pre-filter, particle or HEPA filter, and activated-carbon layer. Some units combine several layers in one cartridge, so a washable outer surface does not make the entire cartridge washable.
Blueair explains in its filter washing guidance that the main filter is not washable or reusable; only the fabric pre-filter can be washed. That distinction is more useful than judging a filter by how dirty it looks. If the manual is unclear, contact the manufacturer before rinsing anything.
Prepare the purifier for maintenance
Turn the purifier off and unplug it. Work on a clear surface where removed parts will not be stepped on or mixed up. Photograph the filter arrangement and note any arrows or pull tabs before taking it apart. Open only the covers intended for routine maintenance; leave the motor and electrical housing closed.
Handle dirty filters gently instead of shaking them into the room. Keep a bag nearby for a used disposable cartridge, and keep clean replacement parts away from the dusty work area. Check that the replacement part number matches your exact model before discarding the old filter.
How to clean air purifier filters that are washable
Clean only the component the manual identifies as washable. For the Blue Signature, Blueair’s pre-filter instructions allow gentle vacuuming with a soft brush or washing the fabric according to its care label. Bleach and harsh chemicals are excluded, and the fabric must air-dry completely before reinstallation.
A rigid mesh panel can have different instructions from a fabric sleeve. The Levoit Vital 200S manual permits cleaning its separate pre-filter with a soft brush or vacuum hose, or washing it with water and mild detergent. It warns against vigorous scrubbing and requires complete air-drying. These directions apply to that pre-filter, not its HEPA/carbon cartridge.
Keep the washable part separate from the main filter throughout the job. Do not add fragrance, disinfectant spray, or essential oils to filter media. Follow the stated drying method rather than speeding things up with an unapproved heat source. A dry-looking surface is not enough if seams or folds still hold moisture.
Replace disposable filters instead of trying to restore them
The Vital 200S manual says not to clean its HEPA/activated-carbon filter and gives a 12-month replacement guideline, with timing varying by use and conditions. Your purifier may have a different interval. Cleaning a pre-filter does not reset the service life of the main cartridge.
Use the manufacturer’s schedule and troubleshooting instructions when airflow drops, odors persist, or noise changes. Those signs do not prove the filter is the only problem. Check permitted maintenance steps and seek support if the issue remains; do not keep washing a disposable filter to avoid replacement.
Reassemble and record the maintenance date
Remove any protective packaging from a new cartridge before installation. Put each layer back in its specified orientation, secure the cover, and follow the manual’s indicator-reset procedure after the required maintenance. Keep the air openings clear and do not operate the purifier with required filters missing.
Write down the cleaning date, replacement date, and filter part number. Set your next reminder from the model’s instructions rather than using one monthly schedule for every device. If the purifier has a dust sensor, look up its separate cleaning method; filter care and sensor care are different tasks.
